Here at Momo's Flowers and More we just got a little more.
Thanks to a nice connection with a Japanese importer Momo has been able to order some unique gifts that can only be found at Momo's Flowers and More.
You'd have to travel seven thousand miles, sit in a cramped airplane and suffer a week of jet lag to find some of these treasures and even then you wouldn't know where to look. Momo has a whimsical and discerning eye when it comes to the "More" part of the Momo's Flowers and More equation and a box arrived yesterday with some holiday treats not found anywhere else in the San Francisco Bay Area or even the United States!
Among our favorites is the Okame and Hyottoko sake sets. Hand painted cups compliment the sake bottle (which would also make a lovely bud vase) of these playful characters.
Hyottoko (火男) is a comical Japanese character, usually portrayed through the use of a mask. His mouth is puckered and skewed to one side. Some versions of this popular character from Japanese theatre have different eye sizes between the left and right eyes. He is often wearing a scarf around his head (usually white with blue dots). Okame (阿亀) or Otafuku (阿多福) is his female companion. (And drinking buddy!)
The origin of the name Hyottoko comes from "fire" (火 hi) and "man" (男 otoko), because the character is blowing fire with a bamboo pipe, hence the shape of the mouth. But it may just be from his drinking too much sake!
