Flowers for Swordsmen.

Flowers for Swordsmen.

Momo's received another interesting order the other day.

A martial Arts instructor who teaches Iaido, The Art of the Japanese sword at Nishi Kalgan Iaido Dojo in Berkeley, California stopped by the shop to order a weekly delivery service of small bouquets that would adorn the shrine at the front of his dojo. This shrine is called the "Shomen" and many times a day, this being a traditional art or "koryu bujitsu" the students bow to the shomen and the instructor (or "Sensei" as his students call him) who wanted something beautiful, natural and with a Japanese sensibility to lend a little color to the very serious proceedings. After all, the practitioners of this art are swinging 3 foot katana, Japanese swords with pinpoint concentration. The mood in the classes is deadly serious so the sprightly arrangements Momo made serve as an exquisite counterpoint to the whistling of sharpened steel that fills the air. And before and after each class the practitioners bow respectfully to the shomen, where Momo's flowers smile back.

Momo has a few recurring customers .Timo at Britt Maries, the fabulous and venerable Solano Avenue dining institution just around the corner from the shop has ordered everything from a large centerpiece for their Grand ReOpening to a host of floating gardenias. But there was something about making these elegant, slightly austere (for her) arrangements for the dojo that brought back Momo's memories of Japan. Where beauty and respect go hand in hand. Just like at Momo's Flowers and More!
