"Springly Basket" is one of the most popular designs here at Momo's Flowers and More. People like the convenience of the kraft bag with handles, the charming combination of roses, stock, dianthus, and other seasonal flowers. They also like the way it's arranged. The general feeling is one of spontaneity and fun, as if it was just gathered on the spur of the moment and "thrown together". But the students at Momo's bi-monthly Flower Arrangement Class now know different.
The fine art of flower arrangement is more than meets the eye. A lovely assortment of flower fanciers gathered at Momo's last Sunday to create their very own "Springly Basket" under the watchful eye and gentle guidance of Momo. Students learned from the ground up the precise and exacting discipline, patience and technique necessary to give "Springly Basket" its special character.
Even soaking the Oasis (a brick of hydrating foam) requires patience. Dunk it in the bucket too quickly and air gets trapped rendering it useless. And then there's the flowers themselves. Students learned not only the names of the flowers they were each given, including some they may have seen but never knew the name of, like Eriostemon, Scabiosa and Astrantia, they also learned the designer's terms for the elements of design. A flower in an arrangement is one of 4 basic types: Mass, Filler, Focal and Line.
But that's not all. Momo also added something not found on the online version: a lovely and delicate bow that serves as yet another flower in the already gorgeous arrangement. Each student left the shop with their own Springly Basket, a deeper appreciation of the floral arts and most importantly a great big smile!
