Momo's Flowers and More is more than just a flower shop. Besides hand made (by Momo!) house wares and imported (from Japan!) gifts, Momo now offers classes in the fine art of Flower arrangement.
On a recent Sunday afternoon Momo led a workshop for creating what she calls a "New Year's Centerpiece". Each student created their own arrangement (under the watchful and gently guiding eye of Momo) which they were able to take home to their families. Along with the expert instruction there was lots of laughs, great conversation (in both Japanese and English) and plenty of good cheer.
Students learned the basics, using generally the same flowers and greens, starting with the preparation of the oasis (the sponge like bricks that form the foundation of most arrangements) but also were introduced to such concepts of spacing, placement, balance and what the Japanese call Ma. Momo told stories- sometimes personal, sometimes universal, adding context for the selection of each flower. "You have to see the final bouquet in your mind." Momo says. "You start with your highest, then your horizontal comes next.
But before that the most important is the vase." Momo laughs, "It is like when you are selecting what clothes to wear. The shoes are the most difficult to decide on. So start with them and your decisions are easier. The vase in flower arrangement are the shoes!" Momo, who always dresses with a charming style all her own, (including great shoes) brings all of her heart to these classes and is excited for the next one. "Everyone was laughing, talking and enjoying being with flowers. I'm looking forward to the next one!"
